Sustainable Foundations, what are the options?
Here at Suolo we are passionate about sustainable foundation methods, and we are particularly keen to promote the use of vibro displacement ground improvement methods wherever possible, especially vibro stone columns, but why?
- Vibro stone columns are formed using aggregates, which have much lower embodied carbon than the concrete used in traditional piling methods.
- Using recycled aggregates are particularly advantageous in terms of carbon creation. On a site with a good stock of crushed concrete available, it might even be possible to complete the ground improvement without importing any additional material.
- Vibro stone columns are most often formed using displacement piling methods, generating very little, if any, spoil for disposal.
- The use of displacement ground improvement methods is very applicable to brownfield sites, where cost of traditional piling is high, potentially making sites with more difficult ground conditions commercially viable to develop.
- There are fewer potential legacy concerns with vibro stone columns, when compared to traditional piling – there are no deep reinforced concrete sections formed within the underlying soil that will need to be considered when planning future redevelopment.
- Base costs for a foundation over soil improved using vibro stone columns are significantly less than the costs associated with traditional bearing pile schemes.
You might be surprised just how many sites are suitable for ground improvement using vibro stone columns; Clay, Made Ground, Sand, Gravel, no problem at all, subject to some specific checks.
At Suoloconsulting we have many years of experience assessing site investigation reports and proposing cost effective, carbon efficient ground improvement solutions.
